THE OCCULT CONNECTION

HASTINGS: I think that’s an important point Jacques brings out, that the occult seems really quite different from the UFO phenomenon.

HYNEK: Yes, that’s a good point to bring up. The booksellers insist on putting UFO books on the occult shelves. And you say, “Well, doggone it, there’s no obvious connection.”

VALLEE: Well, maybe there is, but it’s certainly not clear to what extent, if there is a connection. . . . To me, that’s an indication of how important and central the subject is, that it doesn’t fit into any of the existing categories. When Anatomy of a Phenomenon came out, for instance, I would see it in the bookstores under science; but sometimes it was under science fiction, sometimes it was under occult, and sometimes it was under religion.

HASTINGS: O.K., look at what we have now. I just see a couple of connections. We have one connection of one type of humanoids with the fairies, with the Little People.

We have a connection of a different type of humanoid with the gods from outer space, with legends of gods, space people. We have another connection which seems to be growing with some kind of robot creature that we don’t have in our history except for recent science fiction. But both are quite different traditions. Space people are not Little People. Those are separate traditions.

HYNEK: The large ones are generally more elegant, more stately and reportedly more helpful.

VALLEE: In other words, I am not sure whether it is cultural anthropology or psychology, but we have two categories of occupants: the outside alien and the earth-bound alien. And the Little People are definitely earth-bound. They live in caves, they have oversized heads, they seem to be accustomed to a dark environment, which is consistent with the idea that in all traditions they come out at night, they are mostly night people . . . large eyes, very clever, psychic as hell, and living in caves. Difficult to detect. The contact is on their terms. Then, on the other hand, you have the outside alien who is described as a god from space, a creature from space. The problem is that in both cases there is contact with man and in many UFO cases the occupants themselves are, in fact, men. In the case where the occupant was shot, they were described as ordinary men in white clothing. And in the Eagle River Case,2 they were ordinary men.
